ASIBA, a general incorporated association, plans and operates short-term, hands-on incubation programs and one-day workshops for students in the fields of architecture and urban planning. We are creating an environment where architecture students can take ownership of their projects and bring their own proposals to life, thereby expanding the possibilities of architecture and urban planning.
The event began with a lecture and hands-on session led by a-Haru, CEO of O Co., Ltd. and an active artist. As a leading figure of our generation, a-Haru is actively sharing her ideas and vision with society. She aims to spread a creator culture for the “New Human” through interfaces that awaken sensitivity and perception.
Using “MEs”—a service she created to deepen human thought and stimulate creativity—as an example, aHaru shared what she envisioned and the steps she has taken to bring it to life. By recounting her experiences on the very path that the participants of this program have just embarked upon, she provided them with invaluable insights. In particular, she provided excellent inspiration regarding her “vision” and “process”—specifically, “feeling a sense of doubt and crisis about the social media platforms we use without a second thought, analyzing them, and continually asking and answering the question: ‘What can I, as an individual, do to solve these problems?’”She also explained in detail her approach to communicating that “vision” to adults and society. Since she is of the same generation as us, she served as a relatable (though still somewhat distant) role model, and her lecture was incredibly meaningful.

Next, following last week’s interviews and the first mentoring session, we had time to share within our groups what each project team had learned and what we had worked on this week. Through the process of actually conveying our thoughts to adults during the interviews and mentoring sessions, we were able to reexamine our own feelings and aspirations, and it was a valuable opportunity to discuss these with our group members.

In addition, “prototyping” was assigned as this week’s task. We’re expected to get our hands dirty and focus on doing things “small,” “fast,” “giving it a try,” and “keeping at it.”It was wonderful to see that some participants had already created prototypes before this week’s program and shared them with everyone. They served as excellent role models and inspired the other participants. Furthermore, since this program brings many people together in person, we aim to continue working hard to build relationships where “everyone serves as a role model for one another and learns from each other,” just as we did this time.
