A compost project that redefines the value of waste — the ‘hamidashimono,’ or things left out
Our daily lives overflow with garbage: bread thrown out the moment a shop closes, mail-order clothes that never quite felt right and are never worn, kitchen scraps that were part of a vegetable just moments ago. We think of them as a waste even while feeling it's a shame, and toss them out once they're no longer needed. We call these things, all labeled “unnecessary,” hamidashimono (“things left out”). But are they really worthless? Is there really no path but the trash? Hami Lab (a composting project) takes on the challenge of redefining the value of these hamidashimono, and creating a new context for them.
